Carey planned to make a brief appearance at last month's event at the request of Antonio "L.A." Reid, who is chairman of her label, Island Def Jam. But to her surprise, she was seated at the same table as Mottola and his new wife, singing star Thalia. Mottola and Carey had a bitter breakup, and she has described her marriage to her former mentor as controlling. When the pair saw each other, they exchanged kisses and pleasantries, but Carey said the meeting was "just weird." "He was a gentleman," Carey told The Associated Press in a recent interview. "He was nice, but I wasn't about the photo op, and I was kind of like bamboozled." Carey said the last time she was at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremonies, she was a young superstar, Stevie Wonder had invited her to sing onstage with her — "and I wasn't allowed to go up there, and that was the last time I went to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame." Yeah, just calling to let you guys know, this has been an incredible week and I just want to say thank you so much to everybody that came out to Good Morning America. That was like incredible. It was so great to see all you guys out there, to see everybody at TRL, and at the in-store. I know it was bleak waiting on the line and I appreciate everybody that sat out there in the freezing cold and I was trying to get you hot chocolate and stuff all day, but I was doing a million interviews and I was just like trying to make things happen and trying to get it done. So I hope some of you got some of the doughnuts and stuff at least. But anyway, I just wanted to say how excited I am about "We Belong Together" jumping to #4 on TRL after one day. Seriously, you guys are so amazing and you keep just really like making me more and more happy and just seriously, you never cease to amaze me. | 4/15 マライア＆リル・ジョンライブ２本立て！死んだ！ 
朝８時のタイムズ・スクエアでのマライアのライブもきっちり見てきたよ。今朝のスポーツ新聞の朝刊にそのレポートが掲載されてるはずなので親戚友人縁者の皆様是非チェックしてみてね。ワシが書いた原稿をベースに各紙のベテランライター諸氏がそれぞれの媒体カラーに合わせて演出してるらしいので楽しみ！東スポとかどうなってんだろう〜。
今朝同行したフォトグラファーも初顔合わせながら頑張って世界各国のパパラッチを尻目に堂々ステージ前を占拠、何とマライアの目線ゲットした貴重なショットをここで。ていうか多分コレ世界のどこを探してもココだけでしか見れない写真のはず。クレジットはDamian Castro。早朝ライブが終わり帰宅したのが午前10字半、日本時間の翌朝の朝刊に間に合わせるためにギリギリの〆切までもう30分しかない！ライブ会場近くのスタバでデジタル画像を日本に送信中のフォトグラファーと連絡を取り合いながら30分で1500字のレポートを書き上げた後、scawaiiのBガール特集の最後の原稿も入稿。DJカオリのカッコいい発言が爽快。さすがにここ数日まともに眠っていなかったので１時間ほど死亡、起きたらもうリル・ジョンのライブのプレス受付の時間。今度はオヤZに連絡を取って無事に入場…と思いきやワラワラとリル・ジョンと仲間達が登場。カメラの設定もそこそこにまたまた世界のパパラッチと戦いながらパチパチ。30秒程でリル・ジョン一派は楽屋へ消え、ライブ開始まで時間が余ったのでマライアのインストアを覗きにNOHOに出来たBest Buyへ。しかしそこは戦場、今朝のライブでシケた写真しか撮れなかったと思しきクルー達が執念の場所取りを早い時間から続けていたらしく、呑気に予定時間に登場したらものすごいことになってた。オーストラリアのライターでありマイ・ホーミーのアッシュとしばらく雑談しながら見ていたがNYPDに急かされ止むなく退場。とぼとぼとリル・ジョン会場へ戻る。…この後のレポートはまた今度。もう寝ます。 (source:ブルックリン横町, picture: Damian Castro ) Mariah Carey's 'Mimi' to debut over 'Rainbow' Go ahead and call it a comeback. Sleep isn’t abundant in my life when my pal Mariah hits London. Firstly, at West London’s Baglioni Hotel – one of my favourite London haunts – we had girly nights in trying on dresses, dinners out on the town, and a surprise pyjama party where we flew in three of her closest pals from NYC. We never had a bleak moment – it was all “opulent, decadent and stellar!” Then, the coolest white man to sing, George Michael, invited me and Mariah out to join him and his boyfriend Kenny Goss for dinner at the world famous and ridiculously expensive Cipriani restaurant on Friday night after Mariah had filmed Top of the Pops. George ‘I’m from Watford’ Michael was the most entertaining, fabulous host – and had us mesmerised with his stories and charm. He and Mariah shared tales of fellow peers in music, former record labels and their ethnic backgrounds and their scarred childhoods because of race hate – but it was the nicest dinner party ever and George was nothing like the quiet, strange recluse Elton John has made him out to be. He was lovely! Saturday night in London was the launch of Mariah’s new album The Emancipation of Mimi. The venue Tantra was not our favourite but it was what it was, so we played along with it. When I arrived with MC, there was a media frenzy outside – but once you squeezed inside, the crowd was jamming to every hot new track. DJs Manny Norte, Dodge and Shortee Blitz threw down. It was a heaving, sweaty shakedown! In the house were Mariah’s uber-fabulous new manager Benny Medina (when he wants to speak to me and we’re in the same building, he gets one of his assistants in LA to call me from across the Atlantic to hook us up!.....Fabulous!). When we arrived at the party, Mariah had intended to speak to her guests on the microphone but it didn’t work in the VIP so we nixed that idea. Then, as it was her born day, the club surprised her with a cake which would’ve been a nice thought if it were not for the attempt to put a life-size Mariah on top which looked nothing like her but more like Medusa: they’d attempted to emulate her hair flying in the wind... and they’d paid £3000 for the cake from Harrods. I’d be straight up in Mr Al-Fayed’s face demanding a refund! Then we had giant champagne bottles spitting with fireworks before we hit the hotel for a more intimate party which continued till 10.30am the following day! Also livin’ it up in the party were the very merry designer Wale Adyemi (who sent me a huge bag of clothes I wore in a shoot with Mariah for The Independent the day before!), rapper Est’elle, Alesha formally of Mis-teeq (who came with her future mum-in-law, Harvey from So Solid’s mum Jennifer who told me she loved reading Jasmine’s Juice every week!), singer Mario, Adidas’ PR queen Paola Lucktang, Elle magazine’s Donna Wallace (who sent me a beautiful dress to wear on the night), Wayne Williams, BMG’s Jennifer Mills, Choice FM’s George Kay, actresses Caroline Chikezee (who signed her contract with Benny Medina on the night!) and Naomie Harris. Also in the place were Blue’s Simon Webbe and Lee Ryan (Lee had joined me and Mariah at the hotel the night before, sung to her and asked her for vocal advice – cringe!), Ruff Ryders rapper Jin, African couture designer Beth Tesh-O-Me, The Honeyz and many more… The next few days the tabloids ran the usual diva stories about Mariah which had us rolling in laughter! Where do they get their crap from? Red carpets, rose petals strewn in her path? NW sat down with the surprisingly laidback diva to chat about her new album, The Emancipation Of Mimi. Your new album is called The Emancipation Of Mimi. What does freedom mean to you? There’s a lot of different definitions of freedom, but I think what I meant when I named this album The Emancipation Of Mimi is that I now have the freedom to make the kind of record I wanted to make. And as a result people will get to hear my spirit coming through on this record. Where did the Mimi nickname come from? It was just one of those things that evolved. People just started calling me Mimi and it was very much behind-the-scenes, and now a lot of other people will get to know about it so I’ll have to start using one of my other nicknames. Is it true that another nickname of yours was Mirage – given to you because you never turned up to school on time? Yes darling, I had a problem on getting to school on time … I’m still trying to outgrow that! What did Mimi/Mirage want to be when she grew up? I wanted to be a singer … or a genie! How fabulous is it to be genie? Remember that show I Dream Of Jeanie where she could get anything she wanted? To be able to change your outfit just like that – that’s hot tamale! Do you have any particular memories of your last trip to Australia? Yes, I have wonderful memories of Australia – my favourite memory is of Perth when I swam with the dolphins for the first time. I have pictures on my wall of that, and when you look at my face in those pictures, it’s just so obvious that I’m so happy. It was something I always dreamed of doing and being there in the ocean – I mean, they had a shark net and everything – was such a free and amazing feeling. It really sticks out in my mind as one of my favourite experiences. The album cover is quite striking – you have an amazing set of pins – but people have said that you're trying to look a little too much like Beyonce in the picture. What are your thoughts on that? Honestly, I did a couple of different shoots for the cover. The inspiration came from a photo that the photographer had in his book of a girl with a similar outfit in a silhouette. A lot of people think it looks like this person or that person, but I don’t really know what they mean because it’s just me. It’s a defiant moment and really represents the feeling of The Emancipation of Mimi. How do you go about keeping your voice in shape? The main thing to keep my voice in shape, is to drink a lot of water, get a lot of sleep, and don’t talk a lot. I don’t do all those things when I’m doing promotion, especially because I talk too much, but when I’m on tour, I really try to take care of my voice. Over the years there’s been some crazy reports of infamous Mariah meltdown moments. Do you care what people’s perception of you is? I can’t care, because I can only care about the people who are actually in my life or the people who are my fans and appreciate my music and in turn understand me as a songwriter. We hear you’re planning a children’s book. True? Yes, there’s a plan to do a book; it’s really for bi-racial kids. A woman approached me who is bi-racial as well – and we’re kinda similar-looking – and she and I went through a lot of similar things when we were growing up. She’s my complexion, and her husband is a lot more dark-skinned, and they have kids now so they’re just learning about how to deal with that. Is that still an issue for kids today? It’s still an issue today, so we just thought doing this kind of series like this for children – more like a handbook but fun to read – would be good for them to work through the different kind of problems that can arise. If parents don’t know how to explain the situation to their kids properly it can be difficult, so hopefully this will help out. With the album and the book have you got time for much else in your schedule? Sure, there are plenty of things ahead. There are movie projects, there’s a Broadway show for Christmas which is based around the songs I wrote for my Merry Christmas album. There’s a potential play in London called The Sleeping Prince. It's all over the radio, and the streets ain't mad either. She took some time out to talk to BV about her move to more street-edged sound, her old friend, Trey Lorenz, and the life and loves of Mimi. How well does one have to know you to call you Mimi? Well, before this album, you had to know me pretty well. But lately, everybody is trying to call me Mimi. Most people just call me "M. C." That's cool. Listen, I know it was leaked to the Internet before you had a chance to even select it as a single. Exactly. 50 Cent intentionally leaked his first single, 'Disco Inferno,' to start a buzz and get fan reaction. How do you feel about leaks like this and file sharing in general? Wow, I didn't even know that he did that. Well, first, I'm not used to the whole leak thing. When I heard it happened, I was like yeah, well . . . OK, because I liked it and I felt like it was a strong first single. Jermaine [Dupri] felt the same way. So when the diehard fans responded to the leaked track, we knew we had our first single. As far as file sharing, I'm so not in touch with the whole computer situation. I dunno, if I feel like [file sharing] is stealing, because it's music and it's in the air for everybody to enjoy. But then, we do work within the structure of a record industry system, so for the artist, file sharing can make things difficult. The single and the album have a real definitive street edge, with a lot of heavy-hitting, hip-hop producers. Any concern about alienating your mainstream fan base? If I didn't alienate them when I did 'Fantasy' with ODB, then whatever (laughs). When I did 'Fantasy,' I snuck it on people, and although that version [with ODB] wasn't on the album, it's that version of the song that you can still here in the clubs today. The album version is nowhere near as popular. I don't mind the pop sound, but I've grown. It's taken me a minute to get with a creative team that understands that -- look -- I'm not doing this because I think it's the hot thing of the moment, or whatever. This is part of who I am, and this is what I listen to. A lot of your songs have an intense, torch-song quality, and you write a lot of your own material. Themes like unrequited love keep coming back over and over, has true love eluded you? [snickers] I dunno, I think one of the reasons that people want to be famous is because they feel like they are lacking something maybe, like a sense of approval or whatever it may be. I knew that I wanted to sing from the time I started talking, because it was my creative outlet, my form of escapism. But when it became something that made me famous, I feel like that grew from a desire to be accepted. What's the vision behind your label Monarch? Well, right now, it is about pushing my album. But looking towards the future, it's about signing good artists with a real desire to express themselves. Will Trey Lorenz or any of your other old friends be signed to your label? You know what? Trey is on a lot of songs on the new album. He's like family to me at this point. He's really doing his own thing right now; a lot of writing, and an inspirational project he's working on. So I'm all about supporting him in whatever thing he's working on. Your good friend Randy Jackson is a judge on 'American Idol'. Any chance he could convince you to be a guest judge? It's something that's been proposed to me, and it's something I'm on the fence about. I mean, I would wanna give it to people straight, right? But I wouldn't want to hurt their feelings, you know? As you can see fans from all over the world emailed in with things they’d always wanted to know about Mariah... Which celebrity do you consider to be a diva? (Donna, Dundalk, Ireland) I don’t think of ‘diva’ as being a negative term. To me, diva just means you’re fabulous. I always thought that Diana Ross and Aretha Franklin were fabulous divas. A diva has to have talent you know. Do you consider yourself to be a diva? (Emma Palmer, Bristol) I’m so tired of all this diva nonsense. It’s old, so 1901. Do you have a driving licence? (Marco Hendriks, Holland) No, my licence expired. I don’t drive because I was always so distracted changing the radio and putting on lip gloss. I last drove about four years ago. If you could live your life again, what would you do differently? (Gina Kyriacou, Coulsdon) Nothing. We all go through everything that we have to go through because it’s part of out journey. That’s what makes us grow as human beings. Would you have auditioned for American Idol if it had been around when you were starting out ? (Oliver Sibthorpe, Southend-on Sea) No. [US Talent Show] Star Search was around then, but I didn’t try out for that because I began as a studio musician. I’d been working as a backing singer since I was 13, so my life was more about singing, production and songwriting than being a showbiz kid. Who influenced you when you were growing up? (Kirstie Skelton, Surrey) Marilyn Monroe. There was something special, sensual and childlike about her that was unlike anyone else. I have her piano. It was her mother’s and it was something that reminded Marilyn of her childhood. What really went on with 50 Cent? I’ve read the rumours, but I’d like to know the truth from you. (Leila, London) I’ve no idea what you’re talking about! What are the rumours? What makes you happy? (Joanne Oh, Penang, Malaysia) A lot of things. I love laughing, being with friends…I love being able to appreciate nature, like beautiful water. I also like having fun, like at Christmas. I Love spending time with my dog Jack. And I love a high-heeled mule with an open toe, preferably in crystal and pink! PRIZE QUESTION: Is it true you once sang for a fan and your voice was so high it opened a set of automatic doors? (Keeley, Newquay) What happened is that someone was listening to one of my songs over and over. Her mother was cleaning the garage and the automatic doors kept opening. They realised it was because this girl kept rewinding to a certain part of the song where I was singing a high note! Is it true that your dog Jack has a website? (Jack, London) Jack’s a star. He has a website called LoveLoveJack dedicated to him and I think there’s another one too. He’s eternally two years old- that’s his stage age- and he’s fabulous. Do you get tired having to smile all the time? (Alarderri, Chicago, USA) No I don’t! When I smile it’s always natural and from the heart. What couldn’t you live without? Are you planning to write an autobiography? (Anwar Belhimer, London) Not right now, but I’m working on a children’s book. (Maya Amony, Stockholm) There are lots of things I can’t do, but I don’t want to talk about them because people will focus on them all the more. In your opinion, what’s life all about? (Joanne Oh, penang, Malaysia) Being a good person and continuing to learn and grow as a human being. On your album Charmbracelet there’s a song called Clown, which is about Eminem. What’s this secret about him that you’ve been hiding? (George Flint, South Godstone) Ha ha! I never said that Clown was about Eminem. People must just associate the title with him. I’ll continue to keep the secret as long as Eminem behaves himself! Can you really shatter glass with a high note? (Tom Brown, Chigwell) I don’t know! Your music always helps me when I feel low. Which music do you listen to when you’re down? (Aimee Mawson, Kirknewton) I listen to gospel music, such as the Clark Sisters If you were throwing a dinner party, which three famous people from history- alive or dead-would you invite? When you see fans screaming and waiting for you for hours in the rain and cold weather do you think: ‘how can they do such crazy things?
